چکیده

The paper addresses the issue of TCP-friendly congestion control mechanism for many-to-many communication environment. Lack of congestion control inhibits deployment of WAN applications that involve collaboration of groups of processes in the Internet environment. Recent efforts targeted unicast WAN congestion control (TFRC). We extend that approach to multicast many-tomany applications that operate using a middleware framework. Our congestion control mechanism was implemented within a group communication middleware and tested in a multi-continent environment. The measurements have proved the proposed approach to be robust, efficient and TCP-friendly, as well as to provide fairness among processes that compete for shared resources.

An End-to-End TCP-friendly Architecture for Realtime Playback Applications over the Internet

Lack of support for QoS in the Internet has not prevented rapid growth of realtime streaming applications during the last few years and this trend is expected to continue. Many of these applications playback stored media (i.e. video, audio) for a client over the network. In a shared network such as the Internet, all end-systems are expected to be “good network citizens” and react to congestion ...

RAP: An End-to-End Rate-Based Congestion Control Mechanism for Realtime Streams in the Internet

End-to-end congestion control mechanisms have been critical to the robustness and stability of the Internet. Most of today’s Internet traffic is TCP, and we expect this to remain so in the future. Thus, having “TCP-friendly” behavior is crucial for new applications. However, the emergence of non-congestion-controlled realtime applications threatens unfairness to competing TCP traffic and possib...

Beyond TCP-Friendliness: A New Paradigm for End-to-End Congestion Control

The dominant paradigm for congestion control in the Internet today is based on the notion of TCP-friendliness. To be TCP-friendly, a source must behave in such a way to achieve a bandwidth that is similar to the bandwidth obtained by a TCP flow that would observe the same Round Trip Time (RTT) and the same loss rate. However, with the success of the Internet comes the deployment of an increasin...

The Direct Adjustment Algorithm: A TCP-Friendly Adaptation Scheme

Many distributed multimedia applications have the ability to adapt to uctuations in the network conditions. By adjusting temporal and spatial quality to available bandwidth, or manipulating the playout time of continuous media in response to variations in delay, multimedia ows can keep an acceptable QoS level at the end systems. In this study, we present a scheme for adapting the transmission r...

Decoupling congestion control from TCP (semi-TCP) for multi-hop wireless networks

Although many problems for transmission control protocol (TCP) in multi-hop wireless networks have been studied with many proposals in the literature, they are not solved completely yet. Different from the existing proposals to mitigate the limitation of TCP in multi-hop wireless networks, we propose a framework of semi-TCP which decouples two functionalities of traditional TCP, i.e., congestio...
